RESPONSIVE READING: II Samuel 22 : 21-29

The Bible


1.     Psalm 100 : 1-5

1     Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.

2     Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

3     Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

4     Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

5     For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.


2.     Psalm 94 : 12-14

12     Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law;

13     That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.

14     For the LORD will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.

7.     Lamentations 3 : 22, 31, 39-41

22     It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

31     For the Lord will not cast off for ever:

39     Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?

40     Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD.

8.     Galatians 5 : 1, 13, 14

1     Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

13     For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

14     For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.


9.     Galatians 6 : 7, 8

7     Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

8     For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.


10.     Ephesians 2 : 1, 2, 4-8

1     And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

2     Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

4     But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

5     Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

6     And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

7     That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

8     For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.


Science and Health


1.     339 : 8-9

God, Spirit, alone created all, and called it good.


2.     6 : 17-22

"God is Love." More than this we cannot ask, higher we cannot look, farther we cannot go. To suppose that God forgives or punishes sin according as His mercy is sought or unsought, is to misunderstand Love and to make prayer the safety-valve for wrong-doing.


3.     35 : 30 only

The design of Love is to reform the sinner.


4.     5 : 22-28

Prayer is not to be used as a confessional to cancel sin. Such an error would impede true religion. Sin is forgiven only as it is destroyed by Christ, — Truth and Life. If prayer nourishes the belief that sin is cancelled, and that man is made better merely by praying, prayer is an evil. He grows worse who continues in sin because he fancies himself forgiven.


5.     10 : 22-4

Experience teaches us that we do not always receive the blessings we ask for in prayer. There is some misapprehension of the source and means of all goodness and blessedness, or we should certainly receive that for which we ask. The Scriptures say: "Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts." That which we desire and for which we ask, it is not always best for us to receive. In this case infinite Love will not grant the request. Do you ask wisdom to be merciful and not to punish sin? Then "ye ask amiss." Without punishment, sin would multiply. Jesus' prayer, "Forgive us our debts," specified also the terms of forgiveness.

When forgiving the adulterous woman he said, "Go, and sin no more."


6.     11 : 8-11

The moral law, which has the right to acquit or condemn, always demands restitution before mortals can "go up higher." Broken law brings penalty in order to compel this progress.


7.     6 : 11-16

To cause suffering as the result of sin, is the means of destroying sin. Every supposed pleasure in sin will furnish more than its equivalent of pain, until belief in material life and sin is destroyed. To reach heaven, the harmony of being, we must understand the divine Principle of being.


8.     537 : 14 (Error)-15

Error excludes itself from harmony. Sin is its own punishment.


9.     240 : 18-4

Mortals move onward towards good or evil as time glides on. If mortals are not progressive, past failures will be repeated until all wrong work is effaced or rectified. If at present satisfied with wrong-doing, we must learn to loathe it. If at present content with idleness, we must become dissatisfied with it. Remember that mankind must sooner or later, either by suffering or by Science, be convinced of the error that is to be overcome.

In trying to undo the errors of sense one must pay fully and fairly the utmost farthing, until all error is finally brought into subjection to Truth. The divine method of paying sin's wages involves unwinding one's snarls, and learning from experience how to divide between sense and Soul.

"Whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth." He, who knows God's will or the demands of divine Science and obeys them, incurs the hostility of envy; and he who refuses obedience to God, is chastened by Love.


10.     19 : 26-28

If living in disobedience to Him, we ought to feel no security, although God is good.


11.     322 : 31-12

"Canst thou by searching find out God?" It is easier to desire Truth than to rid one's self of error. Mortals may seek the understanding of Christian Science, but they will not be able to glean from Christian Science the facts of being without striving for them. This strife consists in the endeavor to forsake error of every kind and to possess no other consciousness but good.

Through the wholesome chastisements of Love, we are helped onward in the march towards righteousness, peace, and purity, which are the landmarks of Science. Beholding the infinite tasks of truth, we pause, — wait on God. Then we push onward, until boundless thought walks enraptured, and conception unconfined is winged to reach the divine glory.


12.     251 : 15-27

We must learn how mankind govern the body, — whether through faith in hygiene, in drugs, or in will-power. We should learn whether they govern the body through a belief in the necessity of sickness and death, sin and pardon, or govern it from the higher understanding that the divine Mind makes perfect, acts upon the so-called human mind through truth, leads the human mind to relinquish all error, to find the divine Mind to be the only Mind, and the healer of sin, disease, death. This process of higher spiritual understanding improves mankind until error disappears, and nothing is left which deserves to perish or to be punished.


13.     253 : 18-19, 32-8

If you believe in and practise wrong knowingly, you can at once change your course and do right.


The divine demand, "Be ye therefore perfect," is scientific, and the human footsteps leading to perfection are indispensable. Individuals are consistent who, watching and praying, can "run, and not be weary; ... walk, and not faint," who gain good rapidly and hold their position, or attain slowly and yield not to discouragement. God requires perfection, but not until the battle between Spirit and flesh is fought and the victory won.


14.     254 : 12-15, 19 (the)-23

Imperfect mortals grasp the ultimate of spiritual perfection slowly; but to begin aright and to continue the strife of demonstrating the great problem of being, is doing much.

…the human self must be evangelized. This task God demands us to accept lovingly to-day, and to abandon so fast as practical the material, and to work out the spiritual which determines the outward and actual.


15.     569 : 11-14

He that touches the hem of Christ's robe and masters his mortal beliefs, animality, and hate, rejoices in the proof of healing, — in a sweet and certain sense that God is Love.



Love is the liberator.
