RESPONSIVE READING: Psalm 100 : 1-5

1.     Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.

2.     Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

3.     Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

4.     Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

5.     For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

LESSON SERMON

The Bible

1.     Psalm 148 : 1-5

1     Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights.

2     Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.

3     Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light.

4     Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.

5     Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.

2.     Genesis 1 : 1-3, 9, 11, 12, 16-18, 20, 24, 26-28 (to 1st ,), 31 (to 1st .)

1     In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2     And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3     And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

9     And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

11     And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

12     And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

16     And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

17     And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18     And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

20     And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

24     And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

26     And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27     So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28     And God blessed them.

31     And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.

3.     Isaiah 42 : 5 (to 1st ;), 6-8

5     Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out;

6     I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;

7     To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

8     I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

4.     Isaiah 45 : 9 (to 1st ?)

9     Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou?

5.     Matthew 23 : 1 (to Jesus), 8 (be)-10

1     Then spake Jesus…

8     …be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.

9     And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

10     Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

6.     Acts 17 : 22-28

22     Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

23     For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

24     God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25     Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26     And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27     That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28     For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

7.     Colossians 1 : 16, 17

16     For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

17     And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

8.     Psalm 104 : 31

31     The glory of the LORD shall endure for ever: the LORD shall rejoice in his works.

Science and Health

1. 295 : 5-8

God creates and governs the universe, including man. The universe is filled with spiritual ideas, which He evolves, and they are obedient to the Mind that makes them.

2. 583 : 20-21 (to ;), 24 (God)-25

CREATOR. Spirit; Mind; intelligence; the animating divine Principle of all that is real and good; …God, who made all that was made and could not create an atom or an element the opposite of Himself.

3. 502 : 22-5

Genesis i. 1. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

The infinite has no beginning. This word beginning is employed to signify the only, — that is, the eternal verity and unity of God and man, including the universe. The creative Principle — Life, Truth, and Love — is God. The universe reflects God. There is but one creator and one creation. This creation consists of the unfolding of spiritual ideas and their identities, which are embraced in the infinite Mind and forever reflected. These ideas range from the infinitesimal to infinity, and the highest ideas are the sons and daughters of God.

4. 332 : 4 (Father)-5

Father-Mother is the name for Deity, which indicates His tender relationship to His spiritual creation.

5. 31 : 4-6, 10-11

Jesus acknowledged no ties of the flesh. He said: "Call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven."…He recognized Spirit, God, as the only creator, and therefore as the Father of all.

6. 259 : 23-26

God, Spirit, works spiritually, not materially. Brain or matter never formed a human concept. Vibration is not intelligence; hence it is not a creator.

7.     263 : 1-4, 27-28

Mortals are egotists. They believe themselves to be independent workers, personal authors, and even privileged originators of something which Deity would not or could not create.

The multiplication of a human and mortal sense of persons and things is not creation.

8.     507 : 11-16 (to 1st ,), 18-21, 25-6

Genesis i. 11. And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

The universe of Spirit reflects the creative power of the divine Principle,…The tree and herb do not yield fruit because of any propagating power of their own, but because they reflect the Mind which includes all.

This divine Principle of all expresses Science and art throughout His creation, and the immortality of man and the universe. Creation is ever appearing, and must ever continue to appear from the nature of its inexhaustible source. Mortal sense inverts this appearing and calls ideas material. Thus misinterpreted, the divine idea seems to fall to the level of a human or material belief, called mortal man. But the seed is in itself, only as the divine Mind is All and reproduces all — as Mind is the multiplier, and Mind's infinite idea, man and the universe, is the product. The only intelligence or substance of a thought, a seed, or a flower is God, the creator of it.

9.     509 : 20-24

So-called mineral, vegetable, and animal substances are no more contingent now on time or material structure than they were when "the morning stars sang together." Mind made the "plant of the field before it was in the earth."

10.     510 : 27-5

Light is a symbol of Mind, of Life, Truth, and Love, and not a vitalizing property of matter. Sci- ence reveals only one Mind, and this one shining by its own light and governing the universe, including man, in perfect harmony. This Mind forms ideas, its own images, subdivides and radiates their borrowed light, intelligence, and so explains the Scripture phrase, "whose seed is in itself." Thus God's ideas "multiply and replenish the earth."

11.     516 : 9-23

God fashions all things, after His own likeness. Life is reflected in existence, Truth in truthfulness, God in goodness, which impart their own peace and permanence. Love, redolent with unselfishness, bathes all in beauty and light. The grass beneath our feet silently exclaims, "The meek shall inherit the earth." The modest arbutus sends her sweet breath to heaven. The great rock gives shadow and shelter. The sunlight glints from the church-dome, glances into the prison-cell, glides into the sick-chamber, brightens the flower, beautifies the landscape, blesses the earth. Man, made in His likeness, possesses and reflects God's dominion over all the earth. Man and woman as coexistent and eternal with God forever reflect, in glorified quality, the infinite Father-Mother God.

12.     517 : 31-4 (to 2nd .)

Man is not made to till the soil. His birthright is dominion, not subjection. He is lord of the belief in earth and heaven, — himself subordinate alone to his Maker. This is the Science of being.

13.     518 : 24-25

Genesis i. 31. And God saw everything that He had made, and, behold, it was very good.

14.     519 : 3 (Deity)-6, 9-21

Deity was satisfied with His work. How could He be otherwise, since the spiritual creation was the outgrowth, the emanation, of His infinite self-containment and immortal wisdom?

Thus the ideas of God in universal being are complete and forever expressed, for Science reveals infinity and the fatherhood and motherhood of Love. Human capacity is slow to discern and to grasp God's creation and the divine power and presence which go with it, demonstrating its spiritual origin. Mortals can never know the infinite, until they throw off the old man and reach the spiritual image and likeness. What can fathom infinity! How shall we declare Him, till, in the language of the apostle, "we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ"?

Love is the liberator.
