RESPONSIVE READING: I Corinthians 14 : 15, 16, 19, 23, 33, 40

15.     I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

16.     Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

19.     Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

23.     If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

33.     For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

40.     Let all things be done decently and in order.

LESSON SERMON

The Bible

1.     Psalm 139 : 1-7

1     O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.

2     Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.

3     Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.

4     For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.

5     Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.

6     Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

7     Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

2.     Deuteronomy 18 : 9, 13-15

9     When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.

13     Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.

14     For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.

15     The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken.

3.     Matthew 9 : 35

35     And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

4.     Matthew 10 : 1, 5-7, 16, 19 (take), 20

1     And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

5     These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:

6     But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

7     And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

16     Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

19     …take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.

20     For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

5.     Matthew 12 : 14, 15, 24, 25 (to 2nd ,), 34-37

14     Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.

15     But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all.

24     But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

25     And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them,

34     O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

35     A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

36     But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

37     For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

6.     II Timothy 2 : 14-16, 21, 23-26

14     Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.

15     Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

16     But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

21     If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

23     But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.

24     And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,

25     In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

26     And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

7.     II Corinthians 3 : 8, 12, 17, 18

8     How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?

12     Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech.

17     Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

18     But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Science and Health

1.     275 : 6-19

The starting-point of divine Science is that God, Spirit, is All-in-all, and that there is no other might nor Mind, — that God is Love, and therefore He is divine Principle.

To grasp the reality and order of being in its Science, you must begin by reckoning God as the divine Principle of all that really is. Spirit, Life, Truth, Love, combine as one, — and are the Scriptural names for God. All substance, intelligence, wisdom, being, immortality, cause, and effect belong to God. These are His attributes, the eternal manifestations of the infinite divine Principle, Love. No wisdom is wise but His wisdom; no truth is true, no love is lovely, no life is Life but the divine; no good is, but the good God bestows.

2.     viii : 3 (to)-8, 12-15

…to reach the heights of Christian Science, man must live in obedience to its divine Principle. To develop the full might of this Science, the discords of corporeal sense must yield to the harmony of spiritual sense, even as the science of music corrects false tones and gives sweet concord to sound.

The question, What is Truth, is answered by demonstration, — by healing both disease and sin; and this demonstration shows that Christian healing confers the most health and makes the best men.

3.     89 : 20-24

Spirit, God, is heard when the senses are silent. We are all capable of more than we do. The influence or action of Soul confers a freedom, which explains the phenomena of improvisation and the fervor of untutored lips.

4.     88 : 26-28 (to ,)

Eloquence re-echoes the strains of Truth and Love. It is due to inspiration rather than to erudition. It shows the possibilities derived from divine Mind,

5.     11 : 27-32 (to 2nd .)

Prayer cannot change the unalterable Truth, nor can prayer alone give us an understanding of Truth; but prayer, coupled with a fervent habitual desire to know and do the will of God, will bring us into all Truth. Such a desire has little need of audible expression. It is best expressed in thought and in life.

6.     539 : 8-15

What can be the standard of good, of Spirit, of Life, or of Truth, if they produce their opposites, such as evil, matter, error, and death? God could never impart an element of evil, and man possesses nothing which he has not derived from God. How then has man a basis for wrong- doing? Whence does he obtain the propensity or power to do evil? Has Spirit resigned to matter the government of the universe?

7.     26 : 10-18

The Christ was the Spirit which Jesus implied in his own statements: "I am the way, the truth, and the life;" "I and my Father are one." This Christ, or divinity of the man Jesus, was his divine nature, the godliness which animated him. Divine Truth, Life, and Love gave Jesus authority over sin, sickness, and death. His mission was to reveal the Science of celestial being, to prove what God is and what He does for man.

8.     473 : 26-3

Jesus established what he said by demonstration, thus making his acts of higher importance than his words. He proved what he taught. This is the Science of Christianity. Jesus proved the Principle, which heals the sick and casts out error, to be divine. Few, however, except his students understood in the least his teachings and their glorious proofs, — namely, that Life, Truth, and Love (the Principle of this unacknowledged Science) destroy all error, evil, disease, and death.

9.     280 : 4-8

From Love and from the light and harmony which are the abode of Spirit, only reflections of good can come. All things beautiful and harmless are ideas of Mind. Mind creates and multiplies them, and the product must be mental.

10.     494 : 30-5

Our Master cast out devils (evils) and healed the sick. It should be said of his followers also, that they cast fear and all evil out of themselves and others and heal the sick. God will heal the sick through man, whenever man is governed by God. Truth casts out error now as surely as it did nineteen centuries ago. All of Truth is not understood; hence its healing power is not fully demonstrated.

11.     226 : 18-21

Human codes, scholastic theology, material medicine and hygiene, fetter faith and spiritual understanding. Divine Science rends asunder these fetters, and man's birthright of sole allegiance to his Maker asserts itself.

12.     480 : 31-4

As vapor melts before the sun, so evil would vanish before the reality of good. One must hide the other. How important, then, to choose good as the reality! Man is tributary to God, Spirit, and to nothing else. God's being is infinity, freedom, harmony, and boundless bliss.

13.     485 : 14-17

Emerge gently from matter into Spirit. Think not to thwart the spiritual ultimate of all things, but come naturally into Spirit through better health and morals and as the result of spiritual growth.

14.     227 : 16-29

God made man free. Paul said, "I was free born." All men should be free. "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." Love and Truth make free, but evil and error lead into captivity.

Christian Science raises the standard of liberty and cries: "Follow me! Escape from the bondage of sickness, sin, and death!" Jesus marked out the way. Citizens of the world, accept the "glori- ous liberty of the children of God," and be free! This is your divine right. The illusion of material sense, not divine law, has bound you, entangled your free limbs, crippled your capacities, enfeebled your body, and defaced the tablet of your being.

15.     468 : 13-15

Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual.

Love is the liberator.
